If you're like millions of people all across the country, you want to do your part to help your community. You're already giving what you can to charity, but can you do more? The answer is yes. There are tons of organizations, not to mention people in general, who could use not just your money but also your time to assist others.
Volunteering your time and energy is a fantastic way to connect with your community, get your blood flowing, and feel good about yourself and others. Here are a few of our favorite volunteering opportunities:
Your Local Food Bank or Soup Kitchen
If you're looking for a great place to volunteer your time, look no further than right around the corner. There are food banks and soup kitchens in every major city. Depending on the food bank, you might find yourself passing out food in big paper bags or serving hot meals to individuals and families in need. If you feel so inclined and have the ability to cook, you may inquire as to how you can help out in that way as well.
American Red Cross
The American Red Cross is synonymous with people in need, especially when it comes to disaster relief and donating blood. They often need volunteers who can help process donations and will put your specific set of skills to good use. This is especially true if you're medically trained in any way. If you want to help out in a crisis, this is exactly where you’ll want to go.
Big Brothers / Big Sisters
There are thousands of children all across the country who are in need of positive, effective role models. Becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister to a child in need is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. Many of their volunteers come back time and time again. Not only are these experiences beneficial to the child - they have also proven to be beneficial to the volunteer. You will learn things about yourself that you never expected.
People aren't the only living creatures that need your help. Many animal rescues and shelters are taxed with more animals and more work than they can handle alone. They're often in desperate need of volunteers, whether it's to help manage the animals at the rescue itself, to be a foster parent to an animal in need until its Forever Home can be found, or to assist at the location where adoptions occur.
National Park Service
The parks dotted across the United States landscape are some of our greatest assets. Because there are so many parks, the U.S. National Park Service is always in need of volunteers. Their volunteering schedules are very flexible, which means you can donate your time whenever it is most convenient for you. You can help out for one day or decide to commit to a long-term project or position.
Our nation's veterans deserve our respect and admiration at all times. Many of our most celebrated citizens have suffered for years due to ill health or the effects of fighting for our country. Veterans centers exist to offer support to those who often need it most. Your local veterans center will be more than happy to accept your support and time. You may even be privy to a captivating story or two.
